Department of Medical Biology

About

The Department provides the Bachelor's programme in Laboratory and Medical Biology, the Master's programme in Clinical Biology and the Doctoral programme in Infectious Biology.

The bachelor and master theses focus mainly on immunological and molecular biology topics with relevance to human medicine. In cooperation with the hospital in České Budějovice, it is also possible to process clinical data. In research, the Department cooperates with the Institute of Parasitology of the CAS, v.v.i. An interdisciplinary approach to research projects is emphasized. The department aims to train independent, theoretically and practically prepared graduates who will find employment in biomedical research as well as in clinical, diagnostic or forensic laboratories. Compared to similar programs offered by health-oriented faculties, emphasis is placed on a scientific approach and the ability to work independently in experiments.

Department of Experimental Plant Biology

News

About

The Department of Experimental Plant Biology guarantees the Master's degree programme in Plant Physiology and Cell Biology. In the PhD programme Integrative Biology it covers topics focused on plant biology.

We coordinate bachelor's degree programmes, and students' theses focused on physiology, anatomy, ecophysiology, immunity and biochemistry of plants, as well as on the biophysics of photosynthesis and processes on biomembranes. We closely cooperate with the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology (Biology Centre of the CAS) and the Třeboň department of the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS.

  • Photosynthesis of higher plants, algae and cyanobacteria

Photosynthesis is a traditional research topic in institutes located in South Bohemia (Třeboň, České Budějovice, Nové Hrady). The regulation of photosynthesis in higher plants, algae, and cyanobacteria is studied on a molecular level, with respect to environmentally important questions of natural variability of temperature, irradiance, and nutrients. For example, recently we obtained important results on the regulation of photosynthesis in diazotrophic cyanobacteria under conditions of projected increased CO2 levels.Leaf internal limitations to CO2 fixation (mesophyll transport conductance) are studied using gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and stable isotope mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Stomatal physiology, plant–atmosphere interactions

Environmental factors controlling stomatal development and patterning in leaf epidermis are studied using gas exchange, thermography, mass spectrometry, and microscopy. In co-operations with crop research institutes water use efficiency and other physiological and biochemical drought resistance traits are screened in barley, wheat, and forage grass cultivars. Transport and structural properties of the cuticle as a leaf water transport barrier are studied in cooperation with the Institute of Molecular and Cell Botany, University of Bonn.

  • Stable isotopes fractionation in biosphere

Fractionation of water isotopes (18O and D) in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum and stable carbon isotopes (13C/12C) in leaves and stems (tree rings) is applied in the assessment of plant growth conditions, hydraulic architecture and in the tracing of geographical origin of plant products and herbivores (reptiles).

Department of Botany

The Department of Botany is responsible for the Botany Master‘s and Doctoral programmes. The research covers all fields of botany (Phycology, Mycology and lichenology, Bryology, Systematics and ecology of vascular plants). An emphasis is placed on synthesis of broad knowledge of studied organisms and utilization of modern methodological approaches. Scientific projects are realised both in our country and in the world.

About

These web pages are just a vignette, for more informations go to the main web pages of Department of Botany.

The Department of Botany is responsible for the Botany Master‘s and Doctoral programmes, which covers the following branches: Phycology (supervised by J. Kaštovský), Mycology (supervised by M. Vašutová), Bryology (supervised by J. Kučera), Systematics of vascular plants (supervised by M. Štech), Population and community ecology (supervised by J. Lepš), Vegetation and restoration ecology (supervised by K. Prach) and Archeobotany (supervised by J. Beneš). The programs are officially approved for education in English. More information about study programs are available on web pages of the Faculty of Science.

The research covers all fields of botany and joints traditional approach with modern methodological possibilities. Solved projects have a wide scope from the taxonomic and eco-physiological aspects of plants, through plant populations and communities, to the ecosystem and landscape levels. A genetical laboratory was established in 2006 and many molecular techniques are available now.

The individual research projects are especially focused on: modern taxonomical approaches to cyanobacteria and and algae, bryophytes and vascular plants; ecology of fungi, interactions among populations in plant communities, research in underground organs of plants, ecological succession and restoration ecology. Research in taxonomy conducted by staff members contributes substantially to determination handbooks of general importance such as Süsswaserflora von Mitteleuropa, and Flora (vascular plants) of the Czech Republic. Research in ecology results also in wide impact publications.

The Department has close links to the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences, in Třeboň (25 km from České Budějovice) and in Průhonice near Prague. Some staff members have part-time appointments at the Institute and those and students have the possibility to use the facilities of the both institutions; various joint research projects are conducted. Close contacts exist to various foreign institutions. Staff members are or recently were members of the editorial boards or associate editors of several international journals such as Journal of Applied Ecology, Journal of Vegetation Science, Restoration Ecology, Plant Ecology, Plant Biology, Community Ecology, Basic and Applied Ecology, Folia Geobotanica, Preslia, Web Ecology, Annales Botanici Fennici, Algological Studies, European Journal of Phycology, Polish Botanical Journal. The staff members participate or participated in several project of European Union and in other international projects.

An emphasis is placed on a broad field experience, in addition to the theoretical disciplines and experimental approaches. Various excursions are organised by the Department: one-day excursions inside the region, and weekly trips to attractive parts of the country, or to neighbouring landscapes (the Alps, the Carpathian Mts.). Longer excursions are arranged for the students to other biomes (Mediterranean region in Spain, Turkey and Italy, boreal and sub-Arctic zones in Scandinavia and northern Russia, steppe zone in Ukraine and Crimean Peninsula). Students are generally encouraged to spend at least some time in well known universities and institutes abroad and attend international conferences and workshops to present the results of their research efforts.
