PhD study

Department of Ecosystem Biology

  • Ecosystem Biology

    The Department Biology of Ecosystems/Faculty of Science at the University of South Bohemia/ is responsible for a doctoral programme Ecosystem Biology. This programme provides students with a thorough overview of modern methodology in current ecology, focused particularly on mechanisms determining behavior of ecological networks. State-art-methods, such as next generation sequencing, stable isotopes, stoichiometry, mesocosm experiments and many others are accessible to any applicant. The programme is highly interdisciplinary, linking plant and animal ecology in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. A great deal of emphasis is placed on experimental approach, ability of students to design, analyze and evaluate experiments. The research of doctoral theses is often conducted in close cooperation with institutions of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, namely Biology Centre and Institute of Botany.

    Our graduates have gone on to successful careers in academia as well as the public and private sectors. The acquired skills qualify our absolvents for research and education institutions, institutions for applied research in agriculture, forestry and nature conservation, museums, public or commercial administrations, and non-governmental organizations.

  • Limnology (Hydrobiology)

    Unlike other Czech universities, we offer full graduate education in the doctoral programme in Limnology, owing to scientific backgroung, research infractructue and close cooperation with the Institute of Hydrobiology and Centre Algatech in Třeboň.

    Our study programme covers graduate education in all fields and methods of current limnology and hydrobiology, primarily oriented on research of lakes, fishponds and reservoirs, hydrochemistry and nutrient transformation, production and microbial processes in freshwaters. Topics of dissertation theses are focused on both specific issues of particular research of aquatic ecosystems and holistic approach to the entire ecosystems including their catchments, as well as on results applicable in water quality management. To solve specific questions, we employ simple model cultivations of organisms under controlled conditions or conduct long-term ecological research of freshwaters. We focus on monitoring and experimental skills, proper planning of sampling or experimental design, and accurate statistical evaluation. Our research is based on application of current methods and advanced instrumentation in a close cooperation with the above institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. The acquired skills qualify our absolvents for freshwater sciences, research and development, as well as for water management in state and public enterprises, non-governmental organizations or private companies.

  • GA USB

    The Grant Agency of the University of South Bohemia (GAJU) supports students in two ways:

    a) as members of the team projects (managed by a JU employee, but at least half of the team members must be students). The projects last for three years and there may be a turnover of students during the project‘ duration. The project enables the team members to draw funds for research activities, including travel expenses and regular and extraordinary scholarships. Each included student must be within the standard period of study plus one year.

    b) as a principal investigator of individual projects (submitted by students), which are usually focused on research activities carried out by students of the doctoral study program in full-time study (and during the standard study time).

    The duration of an individual project is 1 or 2 years.

  • Financial support of internships

    Information on the possibilities of financing student´s research stays abroad

    A. stays 5 – 30 days long - support from team GA USB projects, your supervisor´s projects, RVO money at your department, ERASMUS programme

    B. 1 - 2 months long stays in EU countries (members of the ERASMUS program) and stays longer than a month in countries which are not members of ERASMUS program - support from the university project supporting students´ mobility, team GA USB projects, your supervisor´s projects, RVO money at your department

    C. 2 - 12 months long stays in EU countries (members of the ERASMUS program) - support from the ERASMUS program

    For more information about ERASMUS programme – visit this page or contact Mgr. Okosy (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

    Mgr. Okosy has also the information on specific support possibilities for individual countries - Austria, Norway, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, ...
    Please note that foreign students cannot ask for support of their stay in their home country from the ERASMUS program.

    For support from team GA USB project contact principal investigator of your team GA USB project.

    For support from the university project supporting students´ mobility contact the vice-dean for doctoral studies. A MOTIVATION LETTER (see below) is part of the application. After your return, you must submit the FINAL REPORT, in which you describe fulfilment of the goals specified in the motivation letter, and attach a CONFIRMATION LETTER from the visited institution about the length of your visit.

    Every study or research stay abroad has to be registered BEFORE your departure (you can find the form named Student´s international mobility form at https://www.prf.jcu.cz/en/faculty/documents/forms).

    Do not forget to ask for a fill out of this CONFIRMATION FORM from the visited institution about the length of your visit at the end of your stay (to receive credits).

    IF THE APPROPRIATE SUPPORTING SOURCE IS THE UNIVERSITY PROJECT FOR STUDENTS' MOBILITY SUPPORT, send a short motivation letter to vice-dean for doctoral studies (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) including:
    - Your name
    - Year of study (you must be a 5th-year or younger student DURING your whole internship)
    - Study program / your thesis subject
    - Destination (institution, name of visited person, country)
    - Length of the stay abroad (if you have a more precise idea about possible dates of your stay, please, specify them)
    - Goals (clearly defined)
    - Financial budget (airfare or ticket price, accommodation price: cheap accommodation of dormitory type,...; what other financial resources you have - your supervisor´s project, support from the Academy of Sciences, ... SPECIFY).
    If the final length of your stay will be shorter than specified in your motivation letter or you will change the destination to a cheaper country, the financial support will be reduced proportionally.

    What is taken into account?
    - length of the stay and the level of expenses for the visited country, together with the total amount of financial means which are available;
    - each student can ask for a financial support of no more than one internship per year (from this project);
    - internship of students who have not spent at least one month at a research stay abroad yet will be preferred;
    - in the case of an internship longer then 3 months, only support up to three months can be offered.

  • Forms

    Do you need to submit the Individual Study Plan, to report your internship for registration, to reimburse teaching, to interrupt your study, to register for the state exam/dissertation defense, to fill out the annual report for the first time (or look at the instructions on how to fill out the Annual Report submitted last year for this year)? Forms and instructions can be found in the Forms section.
