Developing broad-spectrum antiviral drugs for pandemic preparedness

PANVIPREP project

The Laboratory of Structural Chemistry (Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, JU), led by Prof. Ivana Kuta Smatanova, has become a member of an international consortium involved in addressing global issues related to the use of broad-spectrum antiviral drugs within the HORIZON-HLTH-2023-DISEASE-03-04 project "Pandemic preparedness and response: broad-spectrum antivirals for infectious diseases with epidemic potential".

As of 1 January 2024, it is thus participating together with 14 other institutions from 8 European countries in the PANVIPREP project "Developing broad-spectrum antiviral drugs for pandemic preparedness", the results of which will contribute to European and global pandemic preparedness by focusing on research on five high-risk RNA virus families. Our laboratory will investigate enteroviruses EV-A71 and EV-D68. A range of innovative approaches from virology, structural biology, medicinal chemistry and pharmacokinetics will be applied to develop and characterize broad-spectrum antiviral compounds.
