Creation of the Sustainability Working Group

The Faculty of Science of JU established the Sustainability Working Group at the beginning of 2025, which focuses on the environmental, social and economic aspects of the life of the faculty and the entire university campus. The group brings together academic staff, non-academic staff and students who share a common goal of contributing to positive change at our university towards greater sustainability.
The group currently works in five thematic sub-groups. Based on the activities to date, the agendas of the sub-groups can be characterised as follows:
- Strategic Negotiations and Communications - Establishes strategic goals, coordinates communication with faculty and university management, arrange inter-faculty collaboration, and prepares proposals to obtain funding for sustainable projects.
- Faculty and campus internal environment - focuses on waste management, reducing energy consumption, more sustainable cleaning, and promoting student and staff wellbeing.
- Faculty and campus external environment - addresses biodiversity issues, care of green spaces (blue-green infrastructure), reducing pesticide and herbicide use, reducing light pollution and promoting sustainable infrastructure.
- Education - organising educational events, public swap or Earth Day events and preparing educational materials.
- Collaboration - promoting the sharing of good practice between faculties and departments, organising student collaboration across faculties (e.g. sustainable food projects) and engaging in international projects (e.g. Creativ EU project).
Each sub-group is now working on specific short-term goals. The next joint meeting of all groups is planned for the end of April 2025.
