Application form

Information for applicants to doctoral study programmes.

Application deadline
The application, including all required documents and fee payment, must be submitted no later than January 20th in the winter semester. For the summer term, it must be submitted by May 20th.

The application form is available in IS STAG from November 1st till January 20th and from February 1st till May 20th.

Administrative fee
The admission fee is set at 500 CZK (20 €). The applicant pays the fee through IS STAG when filling out the application form.

Dates of Entrance Examination
The entrance examination in the winter term will take place at the end of January or in the first half of February. The entrance examination in the summer semester term will take place in June.

Information for applicants to doctoral study programmes.

Is it possible to study doctoral programmes in English?
All our study programmes are accredited for study both in Czech and English.

What is the standard duration of the PhD study?
The standard duration of study is 4 years.

What is the scholarship amount?
Scholarship for students in doctoral studies starts at 10,000 CZK per month and subsequently can increase depending on their presentations at conferences or accepted publications up to 12,500 CZK per month. For more detailed information see the Dean's Provisions on the Amount of Scholarship.

Where cain I find possible dissertation topics?
The offered topics for doctoral studies can be found on the websites of the respective departments or of the individual superv

What are the possibilities for internships abroad?
An internship abroad with a minimum duration of 1 month and a recommended duration of 3 months is a mandatory part of the doctoral studies.  You can find more information here.

Fees and Funding

Information for applicants to doctoral study programmes.

Fees for studies in English
Students studying in English pay an annual fee of 500 CZK.

Scholarship
Scholarship for students in doctoral study programmes starts at 10 000 CZK per month and increases subsequently, depending on presentations at conferences or accepted publications up to 12 500 CZK per month.

Pedagogical activitiesStudents of English study programmes are not required to teach. If they participate in teaching (assisting in exercises, on excursions, supervising bachelor's or master's theses), they receive an appropriate financial reward.

Project-based funding
As a part of research grants, it is possible to pay regular rewards to students. Contact your prospective supervisor for more information about this option.

GA USB
The Grant Agency of the University of South Bohemia (GAJU) supports students in two ways:

  1. as members of the team projects (managed by a JU employee, but at least half of the team members must be students). The projects last for three years and there may be a turnover of students during the project's duration. The project enables the team members to draw funds for research activities, including travel expenses and regular and extraordinary scholarships. Each included student must be within the standard period of study plus one year.
  2. as a principal investigator of individual projects (submitted by srtudents), which are usually focused on research activities carries out by students of the doctoral study programme in full-time study (and during the standard study time). The duration of an individual project is 1 or 2 years.

Admission Requirements

Information for applicants to doctoral study programmes.

Submitted application form
The applicant must attach to the application form all the documents specified below and have paid the admission fee.
The deadlines for submitting the application forms can be found in the Application section.

Supervisor’s consent
Before registering for admission, the applicant has to find a potential supervisor whose research topics are of interest to them, and submit the application only after that supervisor approved the thesis's supervision.

Proof of previous education
Only graduates of five-year university studies at natural science or related faculties can apply.

Foreign applicants must attach to their application a certified copy of their university diploma/s (or corresponding documents from a foreign university) and the transcript of records (or a document representing the recognition of their university master's education by the Czech authorities) and personal recommendation from two academics (other than the prospective supervisor).

Curriculum Vitae
The applicant must also attach a detailed curriculum vitae to the application.

Dissertation project proposal
At least one week before the date set for the entrance exam, the applicant must send electronically to the Chair of the Specialist Board a draft of the dissertation project prepared in cooperation with the prospective supervisor.

Entrance examination
The entrance examination is performed by a committee appointed by the Dean. The content of the entrance examination is to include assessment of the applicant’s proposal and creative work, their prerequisites for independent scientific and research activities, their ideas about their thesis project, including previous discussions with their supervisor, and their knowledge of the field. The examination may also include verification of the applicant’s language skills. Foreign applicants can complete the admission interview, which will take place on the same date as the interview with other applicants for the given study program, via SKYPE.
