Department of Parasitology

About

The Department of Parasitology provides the Master and Doctoral programmes in Parasitology.
It also coordinates the
theses of the Bachelor degree students focused on parasitology.

The teaching/studies at the Department of Parasitology are focused on biology, diagnostics, clinical manifestations, immunology, biochemistry, ecology, and evolution of parasites. Our department provides theoretical, practical, and field lectures and courses; we organize field training courses in the Czech Republic as well as abroad (for more info, see the For students).
The research covers structural, taxonomical, ecological, biochemical, immunological, phylogenetic, evolutionary, population-genetic, phylogeographic, and genomic aspects of parasite biology. It is focused on several dominant groups of parasites, and also on their symbiotic microorganisms (for more info, see the Research Teams).

About

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics was established on Aug 1st 2016 by fusion of Department of Molecular Biology and Department of Genetics. Most of the research activity is focused to functional analysis of genes using various model organisms from prokaryotes, plants, to Trypanosoma, Drosophila and other insects to mice. Graduate students are trained in modern methods of molecular genetics including mutagenesis, RNA interference, transgenesis and cell culture techniques. The department is closely linked to Biology Centre of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Institute of Parasitology, Entomology and Institute of Plant Molecular Biology). The Department provides education in the Bachelor's programme in Biology, the Master's programme in Functional genetics and bioinformatis and the PhD programme in Integrative Biology.

Department of Medical Biology

About

The Department provides the Bachelor's programme in Laboratory and Medical Biology, the Master's programme in Clinical Biology and the Doctoral programme in Infectious Biology.

The bachelor and master theses focus mainly on immunological and molecular biology topics with relevance to human medicine. In cooperation with the hospital in České Budějovice, it is also possible to process clinical data. In research, the Department cooperates with the Institute of Parasitology of the CAS, v.v.i. An interdisciplinary approach to research projects is emphasized. The department aims to train independent, theoretically and practically prepared graduates who will find employment in biomedical research as well as in clinical, diagnostic or forensic laboratories. Compared to similar programs offered by health-oriented faculties, emphasis is placed on a scientific approach and the ability to work independently in experiments.

Department of Experimental Plant Biology

News

About

The Department of Experimental Plant Biology guarantees the Master's degree programme in Plant Physiology and Cell Biology. In the PhD programme Integrative Biology it covers topics focused on plant biology.

We coordinate bachelor's degree programmes, and students' theses focused on physiology, anatomy, ecophysiology, immunity and biochemistry of plants, as well as on the biophysics of photosynthesis and processes on biomembranes. We closely cooperate with the Institute of Plant Molecular Biology (Biology Centre of the CAS) and the Třeboň department of the Institute of Microbiology of the CAS.

  • Photosynthesis of higher plants, algae and cyanobacteria

Photosynthesis is a traditional research topic in institutes located in South Bohemia (Třeboň, České Budějovice, Nové Hrady). The regulation of photosynthesis in higher plants, algae, and cyanobacteria is studied on a molecular level, with respect to environmentally important questions of natural variability of temperature, irradiance, and nutrients. For example, recently we obtained important results on the regulation of photosynthesis in diazotrophic cyanobacteria under conditions of projected increased CO2 levels.Leaf internal limitations to CO2 fixation (mesophyll transport conductance) are studied using gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and stable isotope mass spectrometry techniques.
  • Stomatal physiology, plant–atmosphere interactions

Environmental factors controlling stomatal development and patterning in leaf epidermis are studied using gas exchange, thermography, mass spectrometry, and microscopy. In co-operations with crop research institutes water use efficiency and other physiological and biochemical drought resistance traits are screened in barley, wheat, and forage grass cultivars. Transport and structural properties of the cuticle as a leaf water transport barrier are studied in cooperation with the Institute of Molecular and Cell Botany, University of Bonn.

  • Stable isotopes fractionation in biosphere

Fractionation of water isotopes (18O and D) in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum and stable carbon isotopes (13C/12C) in leaves and stems (tree rings) is applied in the assessment of plant growth conditions, hydraulic architecture and in the tracing of geographical origin of plant products and herbivores (reptiles).
