Image competition

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Departmental competition for the best photo and picture

There are two categories and the first prize is 3000 CZK in each category:

I. "Scientific Merit" category - captures a major breakthrough in research from the previous year.

II. "Aesthetic Merit" - the photo (image) should be pleasing to the eye and open to all kinds of artistic treatment- people can unleash their inner surrealist.

The competition is under the patronage of prof. Alexander W. Bruce (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). All contestants will be judged by a panel of faculty members from the department with input from likes that contestants receive on our departmental Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/KMBPrFJU

Doctoral studies

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Integrative biology

Integrative Biology PhD programme brings together fields of biology that use similar methodological approaches from the areas of molecular and cell biology, molecular to organ physiology and biochemistry, immunology, infectious biology, proteomics, genetics and genomics, supported by bioinformatics and mathematical modelling. The programme covers molecular cell and developmental biology and physiology in mouse and insect models, plants and unicellular organisms, molecular phylogenetics, evolutionary cytogenetics and molecular integrative physiology and immunology with selected biomedical problems.

In our program we have more than 50 PhD students, half of whom are from abroad. Students participate in cutting-edge science projects; their work has recently appeared for example in eLife and Current Biology journals (see Research Achievements). Students benefit from the excellent facilities of the faculty and several institutes of the Academy of Sciences, they have access to one of the best-equipped centers of electron microscopy in the Czech Republic, confocal microscopes, metabolomic and proteomic centers (there is for example “Bruker Daltonics timsTOF Pro“ equipment for proteomics, which is unique in Central Europe). Students can choose from a variety of courses and each week attend a departmental seminar presented by invited speakers. Once a year we organize Departmental Retreat for PhD students, which is a great opportunity to present their work and meet for the whole weekend in a very informal atmosphere. Every year we organize for students Image Competition.

Current information for prospective students

Deadline for application: January 20nd 2024, official interviews with board members January 22nd - 26th 2024 - read more about application rules
Applicants should first find a mentor, please look at current openings or contact the mentor directly (only with specific interest, general emails with the application are not considered).

Bachelor studies

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics

Bachelor studies

Our department participates on bachelor-level international program Biological Chemistry with the following courses in English:

KMB/219  Introduction to Cell Biology (guarantor and lecturer: doc. Mgr. Tomáš Doležal, Ph.D.)
Mandatory and the first course of the second year of the program held in České Budějovice, taught in block of 4 days usually the third week of September (the very first week of the second academic year). The goal of this course is to introduce students to molecular basis of life and describe the cell as a basic unit of life. Course will build on the historical aspects of discoveries leading to our current knowledge in genetics, molecular and cellular biology and explore the molecular mechanisms behind development and evolution.

KMB/770  Methods in Molecular Biology (guarantor: Mgr. Lenka Chodáková, Ph.D.)
Mandatory practical laboratory course taught in one-week blocks during the 2nd and 3rd week of the second academic year (usually the last week of Septemebr and the first week of October). Students are introduced to the practice of basic methods of molecular biology as nucleic acid isolation, PCR, electrophoresis, cloning and sequencing.

KMB/758  Molecular Biology and Genetics I (guarantor and lecturer: doc. Alexander William Bruce, Ph.D.)
Mandatory winter-semester course introducing students into molecular biology of the cell. Basic molecular biology mechanisms in cells will be reviewed and overview of applications of molecular biology techniques will be given.

KMB/605  Introduction to Bioinformatics (guarantor: prof. Ing. Miroslav Oborník, Ph.D.)
Mandatory summer-semester course introducing students into techniques and applications of the bioinformatics in the molecular-biological and biochemical research as well as in the biotechnology.
