About the programme

The study program Biophysics is focused on the scientific work of students in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology. In their PhD projects, biophysics students are primarily concerned with solving problems that fall thematically into biology and / or chemistry, and they solve these problems using physical methods. The offered PhD projects are both theoretical and experimental, and depending on the specific focus they can deal with either basic or applied research. During the solution of PhD projects, students are led to independent scientific work, from the design and implementation of experimental and theoretical approaches, the correct processing and interpretation of measured or calculated data, to the presentation of results. The topics of dissertations are based on the scientific profile of individual professional groups and cover a wide range of modern biophysical methods from ultrafast laser spectroscopy and single molecule spectroscopy through X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and semiempirical calculations, molecular modeling techniques, to advanced microscopic methods including electron microscopy or atomic force microscopy. These methods are applied to the study of biological systems from the level of molecules through the study of isolated proteins, whole cells to the modeling of processes in ecosystems. Dissertation topics include current biophysics and cover a wide range of methods from ultrafast optical spectroscopy through X-ray diffraction analysis, molecular dynamics, quantum chemical and semi-empirical calculations, molecular modeling techniques, advanced microscopic methods, experimental theory and image processing. These methods are applied to the study of biological systems from the level of individual molecules through cells to the modeling of processes in ecosystems. The program is accredited jointly with the Biology Centre of AS CR in České Budějovice and the Institute of Microbiology AS CR in Třeboň

Programme structure

The curriculum, which is a set of courses taken in individual semesters over a standard period of study, is compatible with the study programme and the internal regulations of the faculty. The individual study plan of each student has a part common to all doctoral students at the Faculty of Arts of the USB (see Study Obligations). The compulsory elective part consists of two sections: pilot PhD courses of the Biophysics programme and additional courses of the Biophysics programme. The student chooses at least two courses from the pilot PhD courses and at least one course from the supplementary courses, depending on the specialisation. The Admissions Committee may also recommend additional courses to supplement knowledge, especially if the student is coming from another discipline or another university. The student draws up his/her study plan in collaboration with the supervisor, who then submits it to the departmental board for approval. The rules for progression in the programme set out the conditions that the student must fulfil during the course of his/her studies and on completion of the programme. This evaluation is governed by the regulations of the Study and Examination Regulations of the USB and the Dean's Measures on the Organisation of Studies in Doctoral Degree Programmes at the Faculty of Scienece of the USB.
