About the programme

The Faculty of Science offers the study in the cross-border study programme Biological Chemistry. The study in this study programme is in English and is carried out in cooperation with Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. Biological Chemistry is an interdisciplinary field of life sciences, and the study programme offers a broad education in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, biophysics, bioinformatics, structural and systems biology. It is unique in its emphasis on multidisciplinarity, comprehensive thinking, international teamwork and communication skills. The cross-border master´s study programme Biological Chemistry benefits from high-quality chemistry programmes and research at the Faculty of Technology and Science JKU in Linz and biology/biochemistry programmes and research at the Faculty of Science USB in České Budějovice. The advantage of the study is not only the receiving of an excellent knowledge of the English language, but also broad knowledge in chemistry, biology, and related fields.
Students of the joint master´s study programme Biological Chemistry work on one master thesis and receive one MSc degree and diploma from the university, where the student works on the thesis.
Graduates can continue their studies in the various Ph.D. study programmes at FSC USB, for example in the programme Biochemistry.
You can apply to studies in master study programmes usually in March every year. An additional term for applications is open in October in case the maximal number of students was not reached.

Programme structure

The programme length is 2.5 years, with one year at University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, one year at Johannes Kepler University in Linz and half year is an extra time which the students can use for work on their master's theses - this allows the students to receive additional results and thus increasing the quality of the master thesis, which often leads to publication in peer-reviewed journals. The programme provides concentrated and in-depth instruction in areas of biological chemistry, chemistry, and biology. Typical study plans include courses such as Organic Chemistry, Advanced Instrumental Analysis, Advanced Biotechnology, Spectroscopy and Structural Elucidation, Practical NMR, Advanced Materials, Molecularly Imprinted Polymers, Gene and Protein Engineering, Electron Microscopy, Computational Chemistry and Molecular Modelling of Biomolecules, Applications of Molecular Modelling, Glycobiochemistry, Xenobiochemistry and Toxicology, Molecular Immunology, Molecular Phylogenetics, Epigenetics and regulation of gene expression, Molecular Ecology, Virology, X-ray Crystallography, Cell Line Cultures in Vitro, Principles of anticancer and antiviral drug development.
