Katedra zoologie Přírodovědecké fakulty JU zajišťuje výzkum a výuku týkající se různých aspektů biologie živočichů.

Pracovníci katedry zoologie se zabývají následujícími okruhy výzkumu:

Archeozoologie, Biologie slunéček a invazní ekologie, Tropická ekologie, Chladová odolnost hmyzu, Diverzita a evoluce neotropických ryb, Ekofyziologie a populační biologie živočichů, Evoluce a fylogeneze savců, Ekologie a biogeografie motýlů, Ekologie a etologie ptáků, Evoluce a fylogeneze živočichů, Hmyzí stresové hormony, Kognitivní etologie ptáků, Primatologie a evoluční antropologie a Výzkum drobných afrických savců.

Katedra zoologie se podílí na zajištění studijního oboru Biologie a studijního oboru Biomedicínská laboratorní technika, bakalářského studijního programu Biologie, studijního oboru Biofyzika, bakalářského studijního programu Biofyzika a studijního oboru Péče o životní prostředí a bakalářského studijního programu Ekologie a ochrana prostředí.

Katedra zoologie garantuje studijní program magisterského oboru Zoologie (se specializacemi Zoologie obratlovců, Entomologie, Ekologie živočichů, Evoluce živočichů, Etologie, Tropická ekologie, Archeozoologie, a Ochrana fauny), a studijní program magisterského oboru Experimentální biologie (se specializací Fyziologie živočichů). Dále garantuje doktorské obory Zoologie, Entomologie a Fyziologie a vývojová biologie živočichů. Koordinuje diplomové práce studentů bakalářských oborů se zaměřením na zoologii.

Pracovníci katedry zajišťují výuku nebo se podílejí na výuce kurzů garantovaných katedrou Biologie ekosystémů. Pracovníci katedry se rovněž podílejí se na realizaci studijního oboru Biologie a ochrana zájmových organizmů, garantovaného katedrou Biologických disciplín Zemědělské fakulty JU.

Katedra rozvíjí vědeckou aktivitu ve spolupráci s Entomologickým ústavem AV ČR, Hydrobiologickým ústavem AVČR, Parazitologickým ústavem AV ČR, Ústavem půdní biologie AV ČR, Ústavem biologie obratlovců AV ČR, Katedrou zoologie PřF UK, Oddělením etologie Výzkumného ústavu živočišné výroby, v.v.i. a Zoologickým ústavem Univerzity Duisburg-Essen.

The Department of Zoology is responsible for the Zoology and Entomology Master’s and Doctoral programmes. The Ph. D. programmes are designed to provide students with a thorough overview of biology, ecology and the evolution of animals, and with a good knowledge of modern zoological methodology. The studies are focused on animal phylogeny, ecology and the behavior of fish, birds, mammals etc.

The main areas are the following: Archeozoology, Biology of ladybugs and invasion ecology, Biology of small African mammals, Tropical ecology, Cognitive ethology of birds, Diversity and evolution of Neotropical fishes, Ecology and biogeography of butterflies, Ecology and ethology of birds, Ecophysiology and population biology of animals, Evolution and phylogeny of mammals, Insect cold tolerance, Insect stress hormones, Phylogenetics and bioinformatics, and Primatology and evolutionary anthropology.

The department closely collaborates with the following institutions: The Institute of Entomology, Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, v. v. i., The Institute of Hydrobiology, Biology Centre of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i., The Institute of Parasitology, Biology Centre of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i., The Institute of Soil Biology, Biology centre of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i., Institute of Animal Science of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i., Department of Zoology, University of Duisburg-Essen and others.

The Department of Parasitology provides the Master and Doctoral programmes in Parasitology.
It also coordinates the theses of the Bachelor degree students focused on parasitology.

The teaching/studies at the Department of Parasitology are focused on biology, diagnostics, clinical manifestations, immunology, biochemistry, ecology, and evolution of parasites. Our department provides theoretical, practical, and field lectures and courses; we organize field training courses in the Czech Republic as well as abroad (for more info, see the For students).
The research covers structural, taxonomical, ecological, biochemical, immunological, phylogenetic, evolutionary, population-genetic, phylogeographic, and genomic aspects of parasite biology. It is focused on several dominant groups of parasites, and also on their symbiotic microorganisms (for more info, see the Research Teams).
