Ecosystem Biology and Ecology

  • Faculty: Faculty of Science
  • Type of study: doctoral
  • Length of study: 4 years
  • Language of instruction: English
  • Form of study: full-time
  • Tuition fee: 500 CZK per year
  • Programme code: P0511D030057

About the programme

The programme focuses on the study of processes at the level of whole ecosystems, i.e. the flows of matter, energy and information between their individual compartments. The programme is highly interdisciplinary and integrates plant and animal ecology in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. Innovative research methods such as next-generation sequencing, stable isotopes, stoichiometry, mesocosm experiments and many others are available to any applicant. A strong emphasis is placed on the experimental approach, and students' ability to design, analyze, and evaluate experiments. The program is accredited jointly with the Biology Centre of AS CR in České Budějovice

Programme structure

Each student's individual study plan has A. a part common to all PhD students at the Faculty of Scinece (PhD internship, literature research, regular presentation at a seminar, foreign internship, presentation at an international conference, English exam), B. a part of compulsory elective courses from the offer of PhD courses of each programme (2 to 5 courses proposed by the admissions committee) and C. possibly courses recommended by the admissions committee to supplement the knowledge of the master's degree (if the student comes from another field or another school). This Plan is binding on the student and changes to B. and C. courses are only possible after approval by the departmental board. The student draws up his/her study plan in collaboration with the supervisor and then submits it to the departmental board for approval. The rules for progression in the programme set out the conditions to be fulfilled by the student during the course of his/her studies and on completion of the programme.
This evaluation is governed by the Regulations of the Study and Examination Regulations of the USB and the Measure of the Dean of the Faculty of Scinece of the USB No. 62.
